OUR Approach

Through the use of restorative practices no student, no teacher, no one is disposable. When someone causes harm, we work with that person to find the root of their behavior, the root of their hurt that led to that behavior, help them recognize the impact their words and actions have had on others in their community, and work with them to figure out what accountability and repair might look like moving forward. And when we challenge young people to think like that, we are pushing for the same kind of rigor we demand of our students academically, in the realm of SEL, of communication & conflict management skills, of self-awareness & self-regulation.

restorative justice

In our punitive society, it is the norm to remove a harm-doer from their community (like the criminal legal system does, feeding the prison industrial complex), but Restorative Justice says that an investment in someone who has caused harm is also an investment in the safety and future of a community. Because we've all caused harm.

The labels of victim & offender don't work in RJ, because it's not that simple. Hurt people hurt people. Those who cause harm have also experienced it.

consent

No one can force anyone else to engage in a restorative intervention. RJ is all about informed consent. It's about both parties making the conscious decision to try to heal and to figure out together the best path forward.
